Gibraltar Airport (GIB or LXGB)

Gibraltar Airport (GIB or LXGB)
The airport of Gibraltar is located 80 km from our holiday villa, in the area  also known as the “North Front” set at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar, just at the border with Spain. Although the airport is operated and owned by the British Ministry of Defense which uses the airport for military purposes, it also operates civil flights between the UK and Spain.

There are regular daily scheduled air-flight services to Gatwick Airport in London. Other scheduled air-flight services include Luton and Manchester in the United Kingdom. All these Airports provide onward worldwide connections.

Over the years, private jet hire has become an increasingly popular and civilized mode of travel, avoiding crowded airports, delayed flights and bad connections. Gibjets based at Gibraltar Airport, offer private flights to over 1,000 airports.

The airport operates one tarmac runway with a length of 1829 m and is located just 500 meters from the city center. Gibraltar airport is one of the few airports in the world where the runway crosses the road. Read more - on the airport site www.gibraltarairport.gi (in English).

Gibraltar airport - is not only an important element of the transport infrastructure of the wider region, but also a unique attraction. It is located on a small peninsula, an area of 6.8 square kilometres. Lack of space on the peninsula is simply catastrophic because the only runway crosses a busy road, Winston Churchill Avenue, which leads to the land border with Spain. When the plane taxies out to the runway , barriers are lowered on both sides of the road, stopping the flow of traffic. This is very popular with tourists who have the opportunity to take interesting pictures as a memory, but not so popular with the drivers in the traffic-jam!
